Home adaptations and practical support for disabled people

A range of support services are available in Enfield to help disabled, older or vulnerable people live safely and independently at home.

These include help with home repairs and adaptations – the term used for fixtures or fittings in the home, such as grab rails or bath lifts, that make life easier and safer. Some help is also available with funding for major adaptations where needed.

Eligibility

Eligibility varies by scheme, but most are aimed at people who:

  • Are disabled or have a long-term medical condition
  • Have mobility or safety difficulties at home
  • Are older or vulnerable and need practical help
  • Need adaptations to remain independent.

Some services are available to anyone who needs them, but others may only be available to those below a certain level of income or who are on benefits.

Enfield Care and Repair

Enfield Care and Repair is a not-for-profit service that helps people who are older, disabled or vulnerable to maintain safe living conditions and stay independent in their own homes for as long as possible.

The service can help Enfield residents to organise home adaptations and repairs, and can supervise building work until it is completed. Support includes:

  • Advice on home repairs and essential maintenance
  • Help arranging trusted contractors
  • Minor adaptations such as grab rails, ramps or stair rails
  • Assistance applying for grants or funding.

Residents should contact Enfield Care and Repair by phoning 020 8379 1000 for information about the service and costs.

Enfield Council’s disabled facilities grants

Disabled facilities grants can help with the costs of major home adaptations for disabled people, so they can carry on living independently.

Support includes funding towards:

  • Stairlifts
  • Level-access showers or wet rooms
  • Widened doorways or ramps
  • Through-floor lifts
  • Accessible kitchens or bathroom alterations.

Grants for adults will depend on income levels or benefits, but grants for disabled children are available regardless of family income.

The first step is to get an assessment from an occupational therapist. This can be done by calling 020 8379 1001 or filling out the online referral form via the council’s website.
