Summary
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides a government grant towards the cost of installing a heat pump to replace a boiler that runs on fossil fuels, including gas, oil, direct electric or liquified petroleum gas (LPG).
Heat pumps are low-carbon heating systems that are much better for the environment than burning fossil fuels because they reduce carbon emissions.
The grant provides £7,500 towards the cost of either an air source heat pump or ground source heat pump.
Eligibility
Only home owners can apply for the scheme. This means that for private rented accommodation, only the landlord can apply. People who live in social housing (council housing or housing association properties) can’t apply.
New-build houses are usually not eligible for the scheme.
The property must have a valid energy performance certificate and not already have a low-carbon heating system.
How to apply
The home owner should get quotes from several accredited installers. You can find approved installers through the Microgeneration Certification Scheme website.
The Ofgem energy watchdog administers the Boiler Upgrade Scheme nationally. Someone from Ofgem will contact the home owner to confirm that the installer is acting for them.
The grant will be paid directly to the installer to reduce the upfront costs.
The scheme is funded until at least 2028, subject to government policy.
